Three Main Methods Used in Dog Allergies Treatment

Sometimes a pet owner may not realize that their dog is suffering from allergies. Since our canine friends are not able to easily tell us when they have a problem, we need to watch out for the symptoms.

The type of method to use for dog allergies treatment depends upon the type of allergy.
The most common type of dog allergy is a dog flea allergy where a dog is allergic to flea saliva. The second most common is an inhalant allergy to things like mold and pollens. The third most common is dog food allergies when a dog is allergic to the ingredients of his or her food.

The symptoms for different types of dog allergies are usually pretty similar. Most of them involve increased itchiness which results in additional scratching and licking of the inflamed areas. Typical areas of inflammation are on their feet, face, chest and belly, but it could be almost any part of their body. If allowed to continue, the results of dog allergies can be found in other areas as well. In some dogs, they may get chronic ear infections, while in other dogs it may result in things like dog hot spots.

If your dog is showing signs of any type of allergy, it is important to get them to a vet. A veterinarian can help determine the cause of the allergy. A typical medical treatment of severe dog allergy symptoms is the use of steroids or perhaps antihistamines. Either one will usually provide relief within a few hours.

After the dog has some temporary relief from the allergies, it's important to find the underlying cause. It is almost guaranteed that the allergy symptoms will return eventually if the root cause is not found.

In the case of a dog flea allergy, your veterinarian can help you find the fleas on your animal and recommend a dog flea treatment to help remove the fleas. It is important to understand that flea treatment is not a one-time event; typically animals will have to be retreated on a recurring basis in order for it to remain effective.

With a dog inhalant allergy, it can be a little trickier to determine the cause. Some common dog inhalant allergens are pollens, molds, and dust. In the case of pollens, the allergen may be seasonal and go away on its own. In that case a successful treatment may simply be to give your dog an antihistamine for a few weeks at the same time every year. Your veterinarian will be able to direct you with the proper treatment of your dog inhalant allergy.

A dog food allergy can sometimes be the hardest to treat. The main reason for this is that a dog can eat the same food for years and then become allergic to it. Just like our bodies will change over time, so will our canine friends’. While a dog allergy test may not always determine what type of food allergy a dog has, there are other methods. Your veterinarian should be able to recommend a novel food trial. This trial will normally take place over the course of three months and will require that your dog eat a special food that has a unique protein and carbohydrate which your dog has never eaten before. If the symptoms go away while your dog is eating the special food, it can be a good indication that his or her food was the problem.

Gorgeous golden retriever - excellent photography. My goldens were both anemic - I had to upgrade their dog food - the breeder warned me. Vitamins were an option but I wanted food - good food - much pricer but worth it. Luckily I had a great Vet who caught their vitamin needs. Great hub - very comprehensive.
